Welcome Parents, Guardians, and Staff to the 2019-20 School Year
As parents/guardians and staff of students enrolled in St. Gabriel School you are a member of our School Council. Your elected members of School Council work extremely hard to supplement all the great stuff our teachers and staff do to make St. Gabriel School the amazing community and learning environment that it is.
WHAT is School Council?
School Council is an advisory committee to the principal. This is a chance for you to voice your input on activities and needs in our school.
Coordinates or funds activities such as the Staff Christmas Luncheon, PAT Snacks, Sports Day Snacks, Spring Fun Afternoon, Fruit for the Office, Breakfast Program, Alien In-Line Skating, Science in Motion, Teacher Appreciation, and so much more.
Coordinates fundraisers such as Dieleman Catalogue, Valentine’s Family Dance, Walk-a-thon, and Special Event Days.

WHO does School Council consists of:
Prepare agendas, call and chair regular meetings;
Communicate with the principal on a regular basis;
Monthly updates to parents;
Encourage and solicit input from all members and parents;
Promote team work between school council, principal and staff.
In the event of resignation, incapacity or leave of absence of the Chair, fulfill the Chair’s responsibilities;
Ensure the appropriate management of any personal information collected on behalf of the School Council;
Assist the Chair and undertake tasks assigned by the Chair.
Keep accurate records of all transactions and reports to council;
Ensure that records are available, upon request of the school board or school community;
Participate in budget planning and setting out financial objectives with council;
Supervise the affairs and preside at any meeting of the financial committee.
Record minutes, keep minutes, correspondence, records and other school council documents orderly and accessible;
Ensure notice of meetings and other school council events is distributed.
COORDINATORS (Walk-a-thon, Valentine Dance, Spring Fun Afternoon, Special Event Days)
Prepare/ purchase supplies, communicate activity details, and run the activity;
Collaborates and supports the chair in running meetings;
Promotes cooperation between the school and the community;
Seeks input from the School Council, parents and community on major decisions that affect the school;
Establishes, facilitates, communicates and encourages opportunities for School Council, parent and community engagement in school matters;
Provides information on the program in the school and the needs of the students;
Interprets and shares results of provincial achievement test and diploma exams and enables the School Council to provide input into the school’s education plan.
Promotes a collaborative, collegial model of decision making at the school and for School Council and provides support for the decisions of the School Council;
Share professional knowledge with School Council members;
Encourages parents and community members to become involved in school activities;
Share School Council activities and information with other staff, parents and community members;
Represents the teachers’ perspective.
PARENTS AND OTHERS
Share their professional knowledge and expertise;
Encourage feedback and participation from the community;
Communicate information of interest to the School Council and the school community;
Share information from School Council meetings;
Have a clear understanding of the School Council’s objectives;
Attend School Council meetings;
Identify possible topics for agendas.

You have or want to have great leadership and organizational management skills and you’d like to share your talent.
You’d like to meet the people your kids spend their days with and other parents.

HOW you can get involved?
Even if you work during the day, or you are on shift work, you can still get involved! In addition to council executive, there are a lot of volunteer opportunities that can be done from home or during an event.
All council elected positions for the 2019/20 school year need to be filled. Voting will be at our next Annual General Meeting - Wednesday September 17th at 4:00pm in the meeting room

We are asking you to consider committing to your child’s school this year by taking a position on council, and/or by signing up as a volunteer.
